Brick Buy Brick Finds Support From SNAP Financial Access and Customers

“We love that the Lego enthusiasts of all ages finally have a place to gather and feel welcomed!

– Frankie and Bryce

Frankie and Bryce opened Brick Buy Brick, a Lego®-based trade and resale shop, in north Spokane in April, having received support from SNAP Financial Access. They were gracious to host a small SNAP event there, and we caught up for some insight into their initial successes.

Q: What prompted the business idea?

A. Bryce has been a Lego builder since he was a child and when it came time to think of a new path to take in life, owning a Lego-based store was the winning ticket. We knew that Spokane was missing a store like this and we wanted to make sure to execute the plan before it was too late.

Q: How did you find SNAP Financial Access to help with your funding?

A. We worked with SCORE of Spokane [a nonprofit providing a wide range of services to established and budding business owners]. Our advisor there gave us a list and we connected with SNAP the best.

Q: What did you like about working with the SNAP team?

A. We have liked working with SNAP because we knew everyone in their office was excited to watch and help us succeed. Since we have never owned a business before, we have had many, many questions. These questions have always been met with kindness and a willingness to teach. We so appreciate the acceptance that SNAP offers!

Q: How is it going so far?

A. So far, the business is going very well! Spokane has really welcomed us with open arms. The Garland District has also proven to be a great place to set up shop. It has been a learning process but we are enjoying it! We love that the Lego enthusiasts of all ages finally have a place to gather and feel welcomed!

Q: How is it starting a small business with your partner?

A. This journey has been challenging and rewarding. We have had to be very intentional about setting time aside to talk and connect about other things than just the business. Starting a business together has also forced us to practice better communication.

Q: What is the coolest Lego structure you have built/sold/seen built by a customer?

A. We have had a few children (ages 8 and 12) bring in their builds to have on display. The first was a model of the Milk Bottle restaurant. That one was very impressive! The second was a western scene which included great storytelling and slew of interesting wild west type buildings. The builds by adults are impressive, but the cool things that children come up with really take the cake.

Changes are coming to Energy Assistance!

A new program called My Energy Discount-Washington will begin this fall for Avista customers. It can reduce monthly bills by 15-94% for those who qualify, and former SNAP energy assistance recipients will be auto-enrolled if they received a grant in the past two years. We want to spread the word that changes are coming and that this might be available for new clients. For up-to-date information, visit snapwa.org/MyEnergy and share with neighbors who might be eligible.

During the hot weather, many of our neighbors suffer without having access to air conditioning.

August is National Make-A-Will Month

As the saying goes, “where there’s a will, there’s a way.” By creating your will this month, you are not just joining SNAP supporters in creating an essential document — you are making a way to protect your loved ones and support the future of our community, helping your neighbors-in-need move from crisis to stability.
