SUMMER COOLING TIPS stay cool
  • Turn off fans and open windows at night. Close windows during the day to keep in the cool.
  • Install window coverings to prevent heat gain.
  • Get a programmable thermostat to set the cooling cycle while you are away or at home.
  • Set thermostat high between 80 and 85 degrees when not at home. Lower the thermostat to 78 while home.
  • Avoid setting the air conditioner thermostat to the coldest setting; this won’t cool any faster.
  • Make sure ceiling fans rotate clockwise.
  • Fans cool people not rooms, so turn off fans when you aren’t in the room.
  • When you shower, cook, do laundry or even mop your floors – turn on fans to remove heat and humidity – make sure they vent outside. Do these tasks at night or in the early morning.
  • Regular maintenance of cooling equipment is important! Have you checked to make sure equipment is clean, dust-free, and not blocked with clutter?
  • Don’t place lamps or TV by the AC thermostat – the heat from these appliances will make the AC run longer.
  • Avoid using the oven or stove – use a microwave, grill outside or cook when it gets cooler.
  • Wash only full loads of dishes and laundry – do these tasks in the early morning or at night. Air dry.
  • Take short, cool showers instead of baths.
  • Seal cracks & openings that can leak hot air into home. Add caulk or weatherstripping to doors and windows.
  • Turn down the hot water heater temperature to 120 degrees.
  • Move furniture at least 2-3 inches from the windows.
  • Wear clothing that is weather-appropriate.
  • Plant shrubs and trees that shelter your windows in the summer.
