Each year, the federal government provides money to help low-income households meet their energy needs. This program is called the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).
LIHEAP funds are limited, so even qualified households are not guaranteed help. When funds run out, we must wait for Congress to approve more for the next Federal Fiscal Year.
LIHEAP funds are meant to help:
- make home heating more affordable
- avoid shutoff of heating services during the winter
- maintain a warm and safe home.
