Financial Literacy Training

SNAP provides two types of financial skills courses. Short courses are open to anyone, while Money Works: Personal Financial Skills Course is designed for IDA participants and TANF recipients.

Short courses

Life skills courses at SNAP are open to anyone and free of charge. They are usually offered monthly. These short courses are not a substitute for IDA participants or TANF recipients who are referred by their case manager.

  • Basic Money Management, 3 hrs. Focuses on budgeting, tracking expenses, and surviving on a limited income.
  • Rebuilding Your Credit, 3 hrs. Focuses on using banking services, understanding credit and rebuilding a poor credit rating.

Money Works: Personal Financial Skills Course

This is a 15-hour course available to IDA participants, TANF recipients and possibly to others on a limited basis. This course covers the following topics:

  • Setting family financial goals
  • Tracking expenses and using a budget
  • Money traps and spending leaks
  • Avoiding predatory lenders and costly financial services
  • Saving and investing in productive assets
  • Using banking services
  • Taxes and insurance
  • Keeping financial records
  • Maintaining and repairing your credit
